Summary of the Article, "The First Captain Marvel Trailer Will Pummel You with '90s Nostalgia"

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the audience was introduced to Marvel Studio's newest character, Captain Marvel. Well, sort of. Though we didn't see Captain Marvel in person, we saw actor Samuel L. Jackson’s character page someone as the world was crumbling to pieces; the pager was stamped with Captain Marvel's emblem, leading us to believe she was the recipient of the cry for help. Thus, we were introduced to the idea of our newest hero. Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for Captain Marvel's stand-alone movie, and the critics are going wild over all the '90s nostalgia. The Blockbuster Video store, the flannel clothing, and the Doc Martin shoes are just a few of the '90s references jam-packed into the short two-minute trailer. Some fans, like myself, were wondering why the new movie would take place in the '90s. After further investigation, it makes sense that the character would be a part of this era. The upcoming movie will tell Captain Marvel's origin story, so it can't take place in the current 21st century with our favorite Avengers. Additionally, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Agent Carter, and Tony Stark's dad, Howard, already reside in the mid-20th century; since Captain Marvel wouldn't fit in their timeline, she needs to live in a different generation. Placing Captain Marvel in the last decade of the 1900s gives her several years to become the strong hero we'll meet in the next Avengers film. Some people worry that the clever references to the '90s will feel like overkill instead of nostalgia for a bygone age. According to author Angela Watercutter, recreating the feel of the '90s would be far better than recreating specific objects and catchphrases from the decade. Wattercutter says, "Nostalgia clicks in when we’re reminded of something, not shown it outright. If Captain Marvel does that, it will have succeeded—and given Marvel’s first headlining superheroine the movie she deserves." We'll have to wait until the movie hits theaters on March 8, 2019, to see what's in store!
